It took a little more than a year of growing pains at the varsity level, but the Christopher High girls tennis team earned its first match victory in rousing fashion.
The Cougars swept Monte Vista Christian 7-0 on Thursday in Gilroy.
Emily Barham (6-0, 6-1), Shelby O’Hara (6-1, 7-6), Nubia Cruz (6-2, 6-1) and Fredreike Moeller (6-3, 6-2) won singles matches one through four, respectively.
Head coach Patrick McBrearty highlighted O’Hara’s victory at No. 2 singles, noting her difficult three-set loss on Tuesday as motivation to prevent a similar outcome Thursday.
The Cougars doubles put together their best collective efforts of the season as well. Celeste Martinez and Sierra Smith won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, Adena Chen and Laura Frieberg were victorious 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 and Vianey Ramos and Bertha Castillo were triumphant at No. 3 doubles 6-2, 6-3.
CHS water polo
A six-goal fourth quarter propelled the Christopher High varsity boys water polo team past Alvarez 11-7 in a Tri-County Athletic League Valley Division contest Thursday in Salinas.
The Eagles held a slim one-goal lead entering the fourth, but three tallies from Matthew Higginbotham, two by James Benson and another from Brennan Laden pushed the Cougars ahead for good. Higginbotham finished with a team-high six goals. Brennan Wilson and Brandon Irby also had one goal each for the Cougars.
CHS will break in its new pool on Monday, hosting Gilroy High at 3:30 p.m.
Despite six goals from Kaitlin Ramirez, the girls varsity water polo team fell short in their efforts 12-7 against Alvarez.
Natalie Garcia (2) and Shannon McAvoy (1) had the other CHS goals.
