When speaking with Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jeff Garcia this week, I asked him to help out the Gilroy bachelors with a little advice. It’s well known that his wife, Carmella, is a former Playboy Playmate of the Year. I wanted him to let you guys know how you, too, can land a beautiful wife/girlfriend.
“I think the important thing is to never sell yourself short,” Garcia said. “Don’t let anyone take away from the goal of what you really want to attain, and that’s what it’s all about.”
This does not mean you should become a stalker. It does mean that you must have confidence. Garcia has applied this outlook to his life on the gridiron, as well as outside the lines.
“That’s been my life,” he said. “I’ve always shot for the top. I wanted to be the best quarterback, have great things in life. The fact that my wife is a beautiful woman, I’m fortunate that way.
“But when they say ‘beauty is only skin deep,’ she really is a beautiful person on the inside and that’s what makes this marriage and partnership work. She has a tremendous heart. In that way, I’m very fortunate.”
For you cynics, who are thinking that it doesn’t hurt to be an NFL quarterback, you’re right. It doesn’t. But I haven’t heard anyone in my six months in Gilroy talk bad about Garcia as a person, and that goes a long way. Nice guys don’t always finish last, especially once you’re out of high school.
My advice to you high school readers is: Stay patient. When I was 18-years old, the movie titled “Love and Basketball” pretty much summed up how I spent most of my time. Of course, I’m willing to admit it wasn’t exactly “love” I was looking for. You’ve got the rest of your life to meet the right girl/woman, so take your time.
If you live in Gilroy and are over the age of 35, you may be asking, ‘Where am I supposed to find a beautiful woman?’ Well, you may find her in a bar, but as you probably know, that isn’t usually the place long-lasting, meaningful relationships start. You’re going to have to think outside the box and meet women in stress-free environments. At this point in your life, you should also be heeding Garcia’s words about looking for beauty that is more than external.
The main point Garcia made, though, is to never settle for less than you deserve.
“That’s really what it is, aim high,” he said. “I’m an overachiever. That’s how I’ve always been. They tell me that due to the fact of who my wife is, how my wife looks, that I’ve always overachieved. And I’m proud of that.”
And if persistency doesn’t get you what you want, the holidays always provide an excellent backup plan: Mistletoe.
