As the Santa Clara Valley Water District fields public comment on its plans to raise rates, the City of Gilroy is conducting a study on its own water system.
City Administrator Tom Haglund said Monday the city was in the middle of a water rate study, which would be completed and submitted to the Gilroy City Council sometime this summer. Haglund wouldn’t say whether the city’s rates would rise in conjunction with the water district’s, but said the water district’s possible rising rates would factor into the Gilroy study.
“It’s not exactly one for one,” Haglund said.
Gilroy is a water retailer, meaning it has final say over what its customers will pay.
Rainy weather, conservation efforts and a still-struggling economy were reasons for a water rate increase, according to the SCVWD.
The SCVWD board of directors and staff will conduct a public hearing about the proposed groundwater charge increase 10 a.m. Tuesday, at SCVWD headquarters at 5700 Almaden Expressway, San Jose.
