Dear Editor,
I read Editor Mark Derry’s column on letting the Gilroy Visitors Bureau sell merchandise. I totally disagree with him and the councilmen who think it is okay.
First, I would like to know what are the duties of a Visitors Bureau. Does it have set of bylaws and rules to follow? If so, what are they? To say that they will not interfere with Gilroy business when they are permitted to sell merchandise is not entirely correct. What they would sell may be available in local stores. Then the question is who is to make the decision what items to sell. This could lead to problems – right?!
Why can’t they have merchants bring brochures? The Visitors Bureau could provide maps of the area and be able to answer questions about Gilroy history and all the exciting things to do while they are here. Simply put – be able to give information. Lastly, what business is to be given the privilege of showing their merchandise?
