DEAR EDITOR:

I’d like to thank Denise Apuzzo for the kind words expressed in her column regarding the letter I wrote to The Dispatch editor. I have received several compliments from my friends, but one coming from you is kindly appreciated.

The subs and teachers I talk with would agree that most of the kids on the Gilroy High School campus are good kids. It only takes one or two students to disrupt an entire class. I’m sure your own children have told you stories. I hear a little more cussing and profanity than I like to, and occasionally I will talk with them about their word usage. But to most of them its part of their every day language and they don’t think there is anything wrong using the “F” word.

The job of a substitute teacher can be very challenging and at times very difficult. However, there are some very special teachers that are usually overlooked. I am referring to the special education, resource and teachers involved with adaptive P.E. These teachers are responsible for working with students that need one-on-one attention. Without these teachers, those students would be placed in a normal mainstream classroom. Most would not survive. Some are mainstreamed but they have a hard time keeping up with the class and suffer. Teachers try to modify their instructions and work these students but I can still see the fluctuation in the eyes of these students.

On June 10, Mr. Jose Hernandez’s letter to the editor was published on the opinion page. I met this teacher three years ago in the science department teaching biology to limited English speakers. He is a true hero and sacrifices most of his free time to help Latino students. This special teacher and others like him usually receive little to no recognition.

Once again thank you for your kind words and please keep up your strong stance on improving our schools.

Alan Johnson, Gilroy
