Gilroy – A group of miniature pilgrims and Indians will come together in Gilroy Wednesday to share fellowship, learning, and of course, food.

Preschoolers from Julie’s Playland, acting as the pilgrims, recently wrote a letter asking preschoolers from Terri’s Learning Tree, playing the role of the Indians, for their help with growing corn for the winter.

The Indians replied they will be happy to help the pilgrims and will bring them food at a Thanksgiving celebration Wednesday morning.

To prepare for their special gathering, the little Indians are busy constructing small teepees with construction paper, vests, jewelry and feathered headdresses.

They’re also learning how the Indians lived, including that they used every part of the animals they hunted for food, clothing and shelter.

Meanwhile, the pilgrims are constructing their own hats and vests and learning the “simplified history of early America,” said Julie Mullen, owner of Julie’s Playland.

The preschoolers also have been studying what Thanksgiving was like in early America and, perhaps most importantly, how living in a big world requires cooperation.

“Children need to know there’s a big world around them that they’re a part of,” Mullen said. “It gives them a chance to talk about helping each other out and problem solving and cooperating together. What might be difficult for one might be easy for another.”
