VANCOUVER, Wash. – Gilroy Little League’s Girls Majors All-Stars fell one win short of a trip to the Little League Softball World Series, losing a Western Regional championship contest against Alaska 8-1 on Sunday.
Gilroy’s only run came in the fourth inning when Lauren Castro led off with a triple over the centerfielder’s head. Nicole Green doubled to bring Castro home and tie the score 1-1.
Alaska responded with three runs in their half of the inning and also added four more in the fifth.
“Although we fell one win short of the World Series, I couldn’t be prouder of all the girls,” Gilroy Manager Al Orosco said. “They worked very hard and gave it everything they had. To finish in second place in all the Western United States is an amazing accomplishment. We appreciate all the support we had from home. You will be hearing more from these girls as they get older and continue to improve. They are a very special group and it was an honor to be their manager.”
Gilroy went 4-2 in the 10-team tournament held in Vancouver, Wash. over the past week.
Going 3-1 in pool play, Gilroy, representing Northern California, beat Washington in a dramatic semifinal contest to earn the right to face Alaska for the second time in the tournament. Alaska was the only team to beat Gilroy in the tourney.
“What a great experience these girls gave us,” Coach John Green said. “They can hold their heads high knowing they gave it their all.”
