Dear Editor:

It appears that once more our nation has fallen into a religious fervor.

We now stand upon the brink of a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. I am disgusted by the selfish attitudes that run this whole concept. The idea of restricting the rights of others because of what we feel is right or wrong or “sinful” is plain intolerance.

A church can decide whom it wishes to marry, because it has religious freedom. Its policies have spiritual purpose. However, our government is not a spiritual institution, it is an institution based around liberties, and giving equal opportunities to all. Not all religions oppose gay marriage. Thus, to pass such an amendment would be discrimination. It would say that because of the beliefs of many, the minority would not be able to follow their own path.

It should not be up to religion to tell the nation who can and cannot enjoy the journey of a union between two people. Churches can say that the journey does not follow their guidelines, but to say that the government should then restrict such choice is wrong. We are letting religion guide the government, and thus destroying the liberties of those who want the same choice that the rest of us have.

Marriage in the legal sense should be open to any. If we ban same-sex marriages by federal law, we should ban opposite-sex marriages as well.
