RIVERDALE, CALIF. – Anchorpoint Christian knew it was in for a game at Riverdale Christian Saturday.
What the Warriors weren’t expecting when facing the No. 5 team in the state for 8-man football was a home crowd that had been waiting to pounce on the visitors from Gilroy.
“It was one of the most hostile environments I’ve ever been in,” Anchorpoint coach K.C. Adams said.
Despite the adversity, the Warriors put up a fight, falling just a possession short to lose 52-46.
Anchorpoint moves to 1-1 on the season with the loss, allowing another defeat to all but end the team’s playoff hopes. Riverdale is now 2-0.
The temper of the crowd could have been affected by the temperature, as the game was played in 90 degree weather. That didn’t stop the Warriors’ Christian McCrimmon from getting stronger as the game wore on, though, as he finished with 33 carries for 241 yards. Quarterback Josh Ignagni also got into the action, splitting time on offense as a running back and playing linebacker on defense. He finished with over 300 yards passing.
“Our offense was clicking on all cylinders, but they just scored one more,” Adams said. “We just had to tackle better. But the effort was great.”
Kenneth Urbanski was “the nail on the line,” said Adams, who added that Urbanski blocked one player so well on one play that he was flagged because of how odd it seemed to see an individual pushed 30 yards downfield legally.
“That was the most physical team we’ve ever played, which was good,” Adams said. “It was good for them and good for us.”
For the Warriors to even be competitive was a boost in confidence, yet no one on the roster or coaching staff was satisfied with the loss.
“All in all, for a second year team to go toe-to-toe with a veteran team like that … I’m proud of us,” Adams said. “It’s no time to sit up here and sulk. They’re the No. 5 team and we got the No. 7 team (Clovis Christian) this Friday.
“I know we’re one of the top teams around, but we just have to learn how to win it.”
Anchorpoint will have a chance to get back above .500 Friday at 7 p.m. in Gilroy.
