The 8-man football team, in its first year of existence, suffered a 40-12 defeat Saturday to visiting Riverdale Christian. The Warriors are now 3-1 on the season.

“It was a learning experience,” head coach K.C. Adams said. “You put yourself in a situation where you want to play the top teams. I always set my schedule a little bit ahead of what I think I can handle, and hopefully, you can raise your level (of play).”

Unfortunately for Anchorpoint, the team came into the contest injured and outmanned, as Riverdale platoons players on offense and defense. The Warriors often have their athletes playing both ways.

In the first half, however, the home team was holding up well. The Warriors trailed 8-6 after a quarter when Brian Orr scampered into the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown run.

The third quarter was when things got out of hand.

Jarred and Jordan Steele combined for six touchdown runs, two each in the third period alone, giving Riverdale a 26-6 advantage going into the fourth quarter. Anchorpoint’s lone score in the second half came on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Colton Minyard to Ryan Lasondak.

“Number 11 (Jordan Steele), he’s a player,” Adams said. “He could play for any of the top teams around here.”

Adams said he was “fuming” after the game, but after looking back at the tape, he saw plenty of positives to draw upon. He also said that Monday’s practice was by far the best the team has had all season, which tells him his kids are resilient.

“I’m looking forward to (this week’s game at Clovis Christian), we’re better prepared,” Adams said. “It’s good to see a giant, and see how far you have to go. Everyone came to practice and ready to play (Monday). They were determined to get better.”
