For the second straight game, the GHS girls’ basketball team trailed at both the end of the first quarter and the end of the first half.
And for the second straight game, the Mustangs coasted to a comfortable victory.
Behind 23-22 at the half, Gilroy outscored the Titans 19-6 in the third and walked away with a 55-46 win over Gunn at the Burlingame Tournament. After dropping a close one to Thurgood Marshall High on Thursday, the Mustangs rallied to win the tourney’s consolation title.
“To win two games after losing a tough one on the first day speaks to the character of this team,” GHS head coach Kari Williams said. “They could’ve gotten down, but they didn’t do that – so I was happy.”
In the first half, Williams said her team “came out flat and just didn’t have it going on.”
In the decisive third quarter, though, Katherine Hussey scored nine points and fellow junior guard Kristen Campos connected on a pair of three-pointers.
“That got things going on,” Williams said. “We came out and did the things we needed to do.”
The third-year coach said she’s getting frustrated with her team’s inability to execute early in games, but can’t exactly complain with the team’s 7-3 record.
“I keep complaining, but the girls keep winning,” Williams said. “Just the eternal search for perfection I guess.”
Against Gunn, Gilroy was led by Hussey (19 pts), who was named to the all-tournament team after leading Gilroy in scoring for three straight games. Center Amanda Link had 12 points and the backcourt of Shanté Mancera (13 pts) and Kristen Campos (9 pts) combined for six three-pointers.
The Mustangs, winners of three of their last four, now carry momentum into the ultra-competitive, 48-team Nike Hoop Fest, which begins Dec. 27 in Santa Barbara.
“We’re winning and doing a lot of great things,” Williams said. “We’re also getting better every game. And that’s what’s exciting about it.”
