Gilroy – Gilroy’s varsity field hockey team continued to terrorize TCAL opponents by defeating Robert Louis Stevenson 8-0 on Tuesday.

Jennifer Rose led the Mustangs with a hat trick, scoring two goals in the first half and one in the second.

Coach Adam Gemar applauded the play of the junior, commenting on her abilities to strike from long range.

“You don’t get a lot of goals scored at the top of the circle, like Jennifer Rose scored. And I think she had two from the top-center,” he said. “A lot of times it comes from right inside, maybe a rebound or two, someone scoops it in in traffic. So, it’s awesome. We’ve been kind of working on shooting from outside in practice.”

Taking a 5-0 lead into halftime, the Mustangs also received scoring contributions from Laura Spellman, Mandi Jo Torres and Diana Carter.

Torres was assisted by Dani Hemeon and Carter’s goal came off a great cross by Alexis MacPhail, who received the ball from a weaving Lindsey Valadez.

The team improved to 4-1-2 overall, and 4-0 in the TCAL.

“It was kind of the same as our last two games,” Gemar said. “We’re getting better – our chemistry on the field.”

Marissa McBride scored a goal on a put-back in the second half to push the lead to 6-0 before Rose scored her final goal of the game. Elise Ogle capped off the win with a shot from 15 yards out by way of a short corner.

After the contest, Rose credited her teammates’ passing for allowing her to have a career day on the varsity level.

“I might have (scored as many goals in a game) my freshman year, but not on varsity,” she said. “I had really good assists coming in.”

RLS coach Tai Ando gave credit to GHS coaches Adam and Erin Gemar for putting together such a strong program.

“They played great. Great passing, great stick-play, communication – they’re a team you want to emulate,” he said.

JV Note: The junior varsity Mustangs defeated Robert Louis Stevenson 4-0 before the varsity game at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex.

Leading 1-0 at halftime, Emily Costa scored a goal in each half while Victoria Salas and Kathryn Simon each pitched in a goal to seal the victory.
