tri-match win over Balers, Viks
GILROY – The Gilroy High boys golf team successfully defended its home course Wednesday, running away with first place by 19 strokes in the Tri-County Athletic League tri-match.

The Mustangs duffers shot a 209 combined score with Hollister coming in second at 228 and North Salinas in third at 260.

“Gilroy played well today,” head coach Eric Kuwada said. “We are pretty secure with third place in the league at present. We played Salinas last week and lost to them both times, so catching up to them is moot.”

The garlic line-up was highlighted by senior Ryan Dinsmore’s team-low 40 over nine holes, while sophomore Stephen Freeth, freshman Jordan Miller, and sophomore Jami Binowski all finished with 42s. Senior Daniel Perry followed with a 43 and senior Thomas Hoshida rounded out the line-up with a 46.

“Palma still dominates and we still have two matches with them – one at Eagle Ridge and one at Laguna Seca,” Kuwada said. “We will have to play our very best in order to beat them.”

The Mustangs will first compete in the Santa Teresa Invite at Coyote Creek GC on April 8 and the Atwater Invite at Stevenson Ranch GC on April 19 before returning to league action.

“We have a few tournaments next month and our placing in them will be very important for an at-large berth in the CCS,” Kuwada said. “So we have to keep at it and continue to improve and not fall back.”
