Aaron Cimino scattered two hits and four walks over six innings on the mound as the Gilroy High baseball team defeated crosstown for Christopher High 13-1 on Tuesday in Gilroy.
The game was called after six frames as a result of the 10-run rule.
Though the score ended skewed in favor of the Mustangs as they plated crooked numbers in the second and third innings to jump ahead 9-0, a first-inning sequence sent the two teams in different directions early on in the ball game.
After the Mustangs went ahead 1-0 in the top of the first, the Cougars loaded the bases with no outs, receiving a walk to Mike Pirnik, a single to right from Brandon Pickens and an error allowing Nathan Davis to reach safely.
However, Cimino and the Mustangs wriggled out of the jam. Cougars’ clean-up hitter Bryant Cid lifted a fly ball to right field where Matt Brotholic camped under the soaring shot – apparently deep enough to score Pirnik from third.
But Brotholic had other ideas.
The right fielder sent a one-hop seed to home plate and catcher Jordan Dexter applied the tag on Pirnik for the double play.
“That was the turning point for us,” GHS manager Johnny Ramirez said. “Who knows what would have happened differently after that.”
Cimino got Nader Elaskary swinging to retire the side and escape the dangerous situation.
“It’s a learning experience,” CHS manager Ryan Dequin said. “From where I was it looked like it was deep enough. (Brotholic) had to throw a perfect strike, and he did.”
The Cougars hit into three inning-killer double plays in the game, wiping away scoring threats.
“We had opportunities,” Dequin said.
CHS posted its lone run in the bottom of the fifth. Ryan Fredricks delivered a one-out single and later scored on a passed ball.
The Mustangs tacked on four runs in the second and third innings, one in the fifth and three more in the sixth.
Brotholic had two hits, including a solo home run in the fifth, and two RBI. Ryan Alba had a pair of base hits and two RBI out of the leadoff spot and Ronnie Reed and Reed Kienle had two hits and a run batted in apiece. Eric Vegas also had an RBI for the Mustangs who improve to 2-0 on the young season.
“These guys are so focused this year,” Ramirez said.
Both squads have home games Saturday with GHS hosting Gunn at 1 p.m. and CHS welcoming Saratoga for a noon start.
