Despite posting its largest offensive sum of the season, a five-run first inning by the visiting Saratoga Falcons doomed the Christopher High baseball team in a 9-5 loss Saturday in Gilroy.
Down out of the gates 5-0 after one inning and 6-1 after two, the Cougars (0-4) managed to cut the deficit in half by the fourth innning. However, the Falcons kept their distance, plating a pair in the sixth and one more in the seventh to stave off the Cougars.
Brandon Irby, who also pitched three innings in relief, went 2 for 2 at the dish with two RBI. Ryan Fredricks went 1 for 2 with an RBI while Nathan Davis, Nader Elaskary and Bryant Cid also had base hits for CHS.
The Cougars continue non-league action this week beginning with a home contest with Anzar at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday before hitting the road to face Soquel on Thursday.
