An up-and-down, season-opening tournament for the U14 Garlic City Ghosts travel ball team ended at the pinnacle with a championship at the 2011 Fall Season Kickoff at Fremont Sports Complex last weekend.
After a 2-2 Day 1, the Ghosts battled through an injury to teammate, Jared Huddleston, and defeated the Rays 5-3 – a squad that beat the locals 18-2 to begin tournament play – in the semifinals. Huddleston took a fall-tip off the mask and suffered a concussion. The Ghosts rallied in support of their absent catcher in the championship game, and defeated The Hitmen, a Triple-A team – the Ghosts play at the Double-A level – 7-3.
Matt Adamkiewicz went 3-for-4 with three doubles and three RBI, Dakota Gaucin posted a triple and double, Jimmy Lemberger had a double and an RBI and Zach Gallardo and Chris Spohr each collected one RBI in the championship game. Michael Howard scored two runs while Herbie LeBlanc, Joseph Rojas and Matt Jensema accounted three more runs.
On defense, Justin Soseman, who filled in for Huddleston, had a solid performance, assisted the pitchers. Howard earned the win on the hill, pitching six innings before handing the ball to Lemberger for the final frame.
