Gilroy Fire Department paramedics tend to Simon Whittingham, 21, of Felton, who suffered minor injuries when he collided with a big rig on U.S. Highway 101 about one mile south of Highway 25 Wednesday morning. Whittingham was driving northbound in the fast lane passing the empty flat bed rig when he drifted into the center divider, lost control of his Ford Escort wagon striking the guardrail and sending the vehicle back into the freeway where he was struck by the truck. The vehicle then spun off the roadway into a barbed-wire fence. Whittingham’s 28-year-old passenger and the truck driver were not injured in the accident.
