SALINAS – Gilroy’s bats continued to beat up on Tri-County Athletic League competition Tuesday, as the Mustangs returned home from Alvarez with a 14-5 victory.
Five players had two hits or more for Gilroy, with freshman Rafael Garcia going 4-for-4 from the plate with two singles, a double and a triple. Taylor Chris also came just short of the cycle for the Mustangs with a 3-for-4 performance that was only missing a home run. Gilroy’s Gabriel Bonilla, Lukas Fortino and Jose Gamboa had two hits each.
Mustangs coach Clint Wheeler credited his club’s recent success – GHS (6-3) has won five straight while outscoring opponents 69-9 in that period – to making each at-bat count, steadily wearing away at starting pitchers and relievers.
“We have a good approach at the plate right now,” Wheeler said. “Our pitch selection is very good.”
Gilroy’s own pitching has also been impressive.
Max Fishler threw five innings while giving up just one run and striking out six for the win Tuesday.
A six-game stretch consisting of two-game series against Salinas, Palma and San Benito over the next three weeks makes season sweeps over teams such as Alvarez and North Salinas to start the league schedule all the more important.
“We’ve been looking forward to these next six games in league for a while now and the good thing is we haven’t looked past these other teams,” Wheeler said.
At 4-0 in the Tri-County Athletic League, Gilroy is currently a game ahead of Palma and San Benito.
The Mustangs will be back on the diamond Friday at 4 p.m. at Salinas.
