WATSONVILLE – Five different players had five kills or more Tuesday night to push the Gilroy High boys’ volleyball team past Watsonville in four sets: 25-12, 21-25, 25-18, 25-12.

Samuel Howard led the way for the Mustangs with 13 kills, Thomas Costa and Alfred Medenceles each recorded 12, and Etay Haramaty and Steven Valdes both had five.

On top of their work on the attack, the Mustangs also put forth a concerted effort on the defensive side. Costa, Haramaty and Howard each had three blocks, Valdez had five and Dietrich Baumgartner had one.

“The bigger guys definitely played like men,” Gilroy coach Scott Martin said. “They were putting up big, solid blocks.

“It was really good to see. We’ve been working hard at that all year.”

A hot start to the match couldn’t be sustained in the second game, but the final two frames were more what Gilroy’s coach was looking for.

“That’s all were doing at this point, trying to fine-tune things and get more consistent,” Martin said.

Greg Calimpong had yet another all-around great performance, handing out 46 assists, digging 10 balls and tallying a kill and an ace.

Gilroy libero Nico Sandoval had a game-high 20 digs, Haramaty had six scoops and Renz Campos added five.

The Mustangs are now 12-3 overall, and second in the Tri-County Athletic League at 4-1. With the loss, Watsonville drops to 5-6 overall, 2-2 TCAL.

Gilroy will resume league play Thursday at 5 p.m. at Salinas (4-4, 3-2).
