South County Housing will host an orientation meeting Aug. 30, at 6 p.m., at the Rancho Park Apartments in Hollister in hopes of finding more potential homeowners for a self-help home project. San Benito, Gilroy and Morgan Hill residents are eligible to apply to the program.

The City of Gilroy is closer to seeing its legal conflict involving a proposed 349-unit housing project in a south Gilroy cherry orchard dismissed after a Superior Court judge ruled the city did not violate the developer’s rights to a public hearing.

Even though city hall and developers agree that a nearly four-acre empty lot just outside the downtown Morgan Hill boundary should be developed, and a builder is ready to start the construction process, the city’s strict growth control and affordable housing policies might prevent that from happening any time soon. 

Today, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors approved the development of a pilot program to provide housing vouchers for the chronically homeless. The program will create 100 housing vouchers for chronically homeless individuals and families identified through the Housing 1000 campaign.
