as the Mustangs let loose and cut down the Eagles 70-48.
The Gilroy High varsity basketball team hosted an Oak Grove squad with boasting a loaded resume that documented a perfect start the season.
The Eagles, with wins against notable opponents Bellarmine, San Benito and Los Gatos, held a 5-0 record heading into Tuesday night’s non-league battle with the Mustangs.
GHS head coach Matt Tait said his players were simply “on fire” as the Mustangs let loose and cut down the Eagles 70-48.
It was the first time the Eagles allowed more than 48 points to an opponent this season and the fourth time the Mustangs have reached the 70-point mark.
“They played really well,” Tait said. “This was a really good win for them.”
Cameron Yawary registered a game-high 22 points and Ryan Valentino-Pickett knocked down three 3-pointers en route to 13 points. Cameron Harrell posted 11 points and Chima Ikeme hit nine.
The Mustangs (5-1) led 34-24 at the half and widened the margin to 14 by the end of the third, taking away the Eagles’ ability to get to the hoop.
“Defensively they were really good,” Tait said. “(Oak Grove) hurt us in the first half with penetration but in the second half our guys did a great job of shutting down the penetration and forcing them to shoot contested jumpers.”
GHS begins play at the 31st annual Bob Hagen Memorial Tournament at 6:30 p.m. Thursday night against Live Oak.
