Gilroy – The Gilroy High boys water polo team lost 10-4 Wednesday to visiting Carmel.
Carmel (5-5, 2-2 TCAL) moved the ball around and seemingly scored at will against slower Mustang team (4-2, 2-1 TCAL).
“You can tell they are young and inexperienced,” said Carmel fifth-year coach Aaron Gaily. ” But they play hard. You can’t fault them for that.”
Carmel used its speed and hustle to score the first goal 1:16 into the game.
Although Gilroy answered back with 4:50 left in the first with a pass from Kyle Dickinson to Austin Gubrud, Carmel kept the pressure on.
The Padres found several different ways to score. They had a strong 2-meter presence by Cooper Housman, who along with Zach Weston had three goals. Carmel used good ball movement and even got a couple of lob shots to fall in.
Carmel scored one its goal son a steal from Mustang goal Ethan Fortuna.
Carmel was never behind in the game. By the half, the Padres were up 6-2.
“They’re definitely a much faster team than we are,” said Mustang coach Tom Clark. “We were trying to get help ball-side the whole game.”
At times the Mustangs had trouble deciding who would take the shot. The Carmel defense kept them from moving the ball inside for the most part.
“We had our opportunities,” Clark said. “Our guys were playing scared. They would pass the ball to the top players instead of taking the shot.”
Gilroy was led in scoring by Gubrund with two, including a penalty shot. Eric Boe and Daniel Shields scored the other goals for the Mustangs.
Gilroy will continue league play at Palma October 5.
