MORGAN HILL – All six Warriors registered at least two points as the Anchorpoint Christian boys basketball team exploded out to a 24-8 halftime advantage and rode that lead to the final whistle for a 53-25 victory over host Oakwood in Coastal Athletic League action Tuesday evening in Morgan Hill.
Senior point guard Josh Ignagni paced the Warriors with 19 points, shooting 8 of 16 from the field. Nicholas Colmon scored 11 of his 15 points in the second half as the Warriors guarded their comfortable cushion over the young, yet feisty Hawks.
Matt Streeter led all Hawks’ scorers with 10 points, including two straight buckets to bring the home team within 19 points late in the third.
“We are a fast-break team,” Colmon said. “We have a lot of speed out here. You can call them easy buckets, but we call it basketball.”
The Warriors pestered the Hawks early and often in the first quarter, jumping out to a quick 10-0 lead with Ignagni the beneficiary of three Hawks turnovers which he cashed in for easy layups on the other end.
Streeter and Samuel Lai cut the deficit to six with back-to-back scores before Kenneth Urbanski put the Warriors up 12-4 at the end of the first. Urbanski finished with six points.
“It’s hard in practice when there is only six or seven of us, we can’t do five-on-five,” Colmon said. “In a game we need to work on executing our plays and running our offense.”
Streeter and Harsh Sikka kept the Hawks close, narrowing the gap to 19-8 midway through the second quarter. But Ignagni answered with a 3-pointer and Colmon coasted to the hoop for a layup to increase the lead to 16 points at the break.
The win pushes the Warriors’ record to 4-3 in league play and keeps them in the hunt for the postseason with three games remaining.
Anchorpoint has had an up-and-down season thus far. After a tough preseason schedule, the under-staffed Warriors began to find their footing once league began.
Next up for Anchorpoint is a road game against third-place Anzar in San Juan Bautista.
