Mustangs lose touch with Bells in second half.
The Gilroy High boys varsity soccer team arrived a tad too late to the party.

Facing Bellarmine in a non-league matchup on the pitch Tuesday afternoon, the Mustangs kept the Bells within reach into the intermission. However, two Bells’ goals within a five-minute span in the second half expanded a slim 1-0 advantage into an insurmountable 3-0 hole as Bellarmine went on to defeat GHS 3-1.

David Guenther tallied late in the second half for the Mustangs, redirecting a header into the net.

“Those last 15 minutes we put in the work,” head coach Armando Padilla said. “But we waited too long.”

A tight first half set up the Mustangs for a possible chance at the win entering the second half.

“For the most part in the first half we were more of the aggressor. We had five crosses that didn’t have an end to them,” Padilla added.

The Bells went up 2-0 on a penalty kick and added the third on a defensive breakdown in front of the Mustangs’ net.

The Mustangs are now 1-1 in the early going. GHS beat Monta Vista 3-2 on Saturday to begin the season.
