DEAR EDITOR:

Stand tall, Bob Dillon, the line is forming behind you regarding banning “safe and sane” fireworks in Gilroy. Jeannette Stimac beat me to the punch in Thursday’s paper, but I am right behind both of you in full support.

Not only the question of the city costs of added fire and police protection, what does it cost the city to clean up the “waste” left behind afterward.

In the past years, I have observed the street sweeper near Gilroy High have to get out of his vehicle, throw the waste in a bin on the side of the vehicle and get back in and continue the street sweeping until the next pile of waste(spent fireworks).

And, the illegal fireworks started early this year and continued on for at least a week after the Fourth.

We even had a neighbor shoot off at least six of those huge illegals that sound and look like the city’s display – from the backyard.

And, of course, by the time Officer Hogue came out, the neighbor claimed her cousin did it and was gone – maybe true, but they were over and above the “usual” illegal ones.

I enjoyed Fire Chief Jeff Clet’s statements:

“Having legal fireworks does not match our mission statement.”

“Where there are legal fireworks, illegal ones usually follow.”

“When they (fireworks) are all illegal, you just get less users.”

So, let’s re-think this ban one more and time and listen to Dillon, Jeannette Stimac, myself and a few others – ban those “safe and sane” fireworks.

Surely those clubs that “benefit” from the sales could find better fund raising ideas.
