‘Second Chance’ gives offenders option to avoid jail

The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office and all other county law enforcement agencies have launched “Operation Second Chance 2009,” a month-long warrant amnesty program for those who committed non-violent misdemeanor or traffic violations. Turn yourself in and you’ll receive a citation with a new court date instead of spending the holidays in jail, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Rick Sung.

“Operation Second Chance” is directed towards all misdemeanor warrants, no matter what the bail is, including those stamped “No Cite and Release,” “No Walk-Over” and “Post and Forfeit.”

Felony warrants and any warrant involving violence do not qualify. However, those with these types of warrants should take this opportunity to turn themselves in so they can have their day in court, Sung said.

Visit your local police station or the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department to self-surrender. Details: 808-4717
