The Christopher High boys varsity Summer League basketball team participated in the Monte Vista Christian Summer League in Watsonville and finished in the season in first place with a 9-1 record.
The team also entered the 42nd Annual Dick Edwards Basketball Camp in Sonora July 7 through July 9 and won the tournament championship with a 9-1 overall record.
The locals defeated Golden Valley (Merced) 33 to 30 in the championship game. Contests were timed by two 18-minute running-clock halves. The Cougars rallied to win four consecutive games on July 9 – including a last second 42-40 win against the Dons of Amador Valley (Pleasanton) in the Varsity Bracket semifinal – en route to the title.
• Rachel Allen finished 22nd in the Intermediate Girls 3000 meters at the National Junior Olympics in Maryland. Her time was 12:12.19. Allen made it through two qualifying stages to get to nationals – including placing second in the intermediate division (which consists of 15 and 16 year olds) of the 3000 at Bob Mathias stadium at Tulare Union High School last month.
• The Gilroy Little League Junior softball All-Star team is headed to Arizona next week to play in the Western Regional tournament – the final stop before the World Series. The team is seeking donations toward the team’s travel fund. If cash isn’t the option for you, providing an item for auction is another avenue. • The deadline to register a slow-pitch softball team in the Gilroy Recreation Department’s Fall Program has been extended to Wednesday, Aug. 1 at 4:30 p.m. Men’s, women’s and co-recreational teams will be placed into leagues for an eight-game season. The top four teams in each league will be invited to a one-night playoff series. A completed roster and $340 entry fee are necessary to register for the program.
