SAN JOSE – The Gilroy Browns Junior Midgets Pop Warner team wrapped up its Peninsula Conference season, beating the Andrew Hill Raiders 34-6 on Saturday to claim sole possession of first place with an 8-0 record.
According to Richard Salazar, president of Gilroy Pop Warner, this year’s edition of the Browns Junior Midgets is the first team at that level to survive league play with an undefeated record since 2002.
Raul Tovar was big on offense and defense for the Browns, causing a fumble and returning it for a 20-yard touchdown and also hauling in a 45-yard reception for a score.
Running back, Brandon Boyd, registered two touchdowns and Eddie Garcia found his way into the end zone to round out the Browns’ offensive output.
Playoffs begin Saturday with the Browns facing Salinas for the second time in three weeks.
— The Junior Pee Wee and Pee Wee cheerleaders spirited their way to first place showings at the Peninsula Conference championships. They now advance to the Northwest Regionals. They are joined by the Junior Midget squad who finished third.
