SANTA CRUZ – The colorful spirit of Brazil transforms the Cocoanut Grove Ballroom into a Mari Gras-style extravaganza during Carnavãl Santa Cruz Saturday.

The evening opens with Santa Cruz’s Fusão Brazilian Dance Troupe. The group will not only show off its authentic Brazilian dance moves but also will provide samba dance lessons for guests.

The Carnavãl night continues with live music by SensaSamba and special guest singer Dandára.

Direct from Brazil, SensaSamba pounds out high-energy sounds, mixing Afro-Brazilian music with samba and salsa. they showcase the latest twist on Brazilian samba called Pagode as well as the more romantic and traditional swing of Bossa Nova.

Dandára, a native of Salvador, Bahia, has been proclaimed the “Brazilian tina Turner” for her strong voice and jumping dance movements.

“Carnavãl is music and dancing to celebrate life,” Cocoanut Grove spokesman Gary Green said. “The Cocoanut Grove provides a wonderful atmosphere for dancers to do just that.”

The evening also will include a costume contest for the most authentic carnavãl-style wear.

Doors open at 9 p.m. Tickets are $16 in advance via the Cocoanut Grove Ticketline (831) 423-2053 or via Streetlight Records in Santa Cruz. Admission is $20 at the door. Guests must be 21 years old to enter. Th eCocoanut grove is located at 400 Beach St. next to the Boardwalk. Take Highway 1 or 17 to Santa Cruz and follow the signs to the beaches/Boardwalk.
