Cedar Trees – All of Them – On Hecker Pass Should be Protected by the Council

Dear Editor,

Thank you to reporter Serdar Tumgoren for the story about the historic cedars in Gilroy published Tuesday, May 1.

I believe that the Gilroy City Council needs to be made to understand that just because you “can” develop a piece of land, doesn’t mean you “should” develop it. Also, just because you can overdevelop adjacent areas doesn’t mean it has no impact. Has anyone glanced at the foothills lately? Eagle Ridge is starting to look like a burn scar across the hillsides.

These trees DO need protection, absolutely and completely. There should be no debate about it. They need protection from greed and from those who would seek to remove them for short-term profit. I believe that even the loss of “only” four or five of these trees is absolutely unacceptable.

The message that needs to be sent to the City Council and to anyone looking to do any new or expanded development is that these trees need to be protected and kept safe, ALL of them. Period.

Any current or future measures or steps the City Council takes resulting in anything less that 100 percent of these trees being protected is not only a crime against all of the residents of Gilroy, but they might as well just cancel all future Earth Day festivals within the city limits because they would become nothing more than annual reminders of the hypocrisy associated with what some would call “progress”.

The short-term revenue will never outweigh the long-term loss if even one of these trees is harmed.

Thanks again for the article.

Thanks to Seed Company For Generosity to Allow May Day Tradition to Go On

Dear Editor,

I would like to publicly thank Syngenta-Rogers Seeds and John and Nancy Hewitt for providing our school with flowers for May Day.

Because of their generosity, Eliot School was able to bring a little cheer to hundreds of homes in our area. We appreciate their help in continuing a heart-warming tradition.
