Gilroy – Fresh off a fifth place showing at the Little league Softball World Series in Portland, Ore., Gilroy’s girls Majors were welcomed home Saturday by family, friends and fans with a parade to celebrate the team’s sensational season.

Chauffeured down Monterey Road in between seventh street and fourth street, the girls waved to fans screaming in support and showing off homemade signs. The team and its coaches were then saluted by being brought on stage in front of Pinnacle Bank Plaza to receive further recognition.

Pitcher and shortstop Kaylana Mah, who was a part of the 2006 team that also took fifth place at the LLSWS, said compared to how nervous she was playing in the World Series, having to just stand in front of people was a piece of cake.

“I thought it was fun and it was good experience,” Mah said.

Brian Rogers, the father of second baseman Randi Rogers, said he was proud of the way Gilroy came out to cheer on the girls.

“It was great. I thought there was a lot of support,” Rogers said. “It really showed that the community was backing them up.”

Gilroy Manager Dusty Lester said the girls were the stars, but the season wouldn’t have been possible if not for the time, energy and money spent by family members, friends, league administrators and donors.

“I thank Little League for everything,” Lester said, “and the parents and coaches and girls,”

The manager made special note of the people who had no direct relationship with the team, but donated money to help cover travel expenses and equipment. The result was memories Gilroy’s girls will have for a lifetime.

“I asked (the girls), ‘Did you guys enjoy it?’ ” Lester said. “And they all said it was quite an experience. Something they’ll never forget.”
