SALINAS – Barely qualifying for the Central Coast Section playoffs put Gilroy softball in a tense situation entering Saturday’s selection meeting.
By the time that meeting was over, though, the Mustangs had not only been invited to the party, but they also couldn’t have asked for a better draw.
A first-round game at Salinas Sports Complex against No. 9 Evergreen Valley (15-11) at 4 p.m. on Wednesday pits No. 8 Gilroy (13-12-1) against an opponent it lost to 1-0 earlier in the season. If the Mustangs are able to win, they’ll face a top-seeded Carlmont squad (22-5-1) which got the best of Gilroy twice but in very close games at the beginning of the schedule.
“We’re very excited,” Gilroy coach Catherine Hallada said. “We played [Evergreen] earlier this season and we lost 1-0. They did beat us but it will be a little more fun to come back and beat them.
“I think they caught us in a time where we weren’t hitting very well.”
Hallada added that facing Carlmont would be an even bigger treat.
“We’re actually really excited to play them. We played them twice and they were two good games.”
The first meeting was a 1-0 loss while the second came by a score of 4-2.
“We’ve been hitting pretty well our last few games so hopefully it will be a different story,” Hallada said.
