The members of Sportsmen Club will host “Fishability Day” on Saturday, May 1, begining at about 8 a.m., at Mendoza Lake on Roop Road.

This is an opportunity for ‘disabled’ kids to get out and catch fish. They will also get free hot dogs, hamburgers, sodas, chips and a T-shirt. Almost 1,500 planted trout from a hatchery in Northern California await the 130 kids expected for the event.

Cost to put on the event is about $5,000 to $6,000, which is funded by the Sportsmen. Club members will prepare the food, provide the bait and assist the fishers. County parks is preparing the parking area and providing chemical toilets, as well as the fising poles.

The club was formed when a bunch of guys first got together about 18 or 19 years ago to form Sportsmen, which meets once a month.

According to Sportsmen member Steve Mitchell, their main project for the last 8 or 9 years has been Fishability Day.

The group used to hold the fishing day up at a lake off of Hecker Pass Highway, but the lake was closed so the event was moved to Mendoza Lake in Gilroy.
