Do you know how to spot a millennial? Say what?!
Do you know how to spot a millennial? Say what?!

Look at the kid on the corner with a cell phone up to his or her face with thumbs flying – most likely text messaging or catching a wireless broadcast. That kid would be a millennial. Anyone born between the 1980s and ’90s qualifies as a millennial. “Anyone” not is probably a parent or grandparent. Check out a very informative Web site on the subject at www.millennielsrising.com. Another factoid found on the site lists the decade as the Oh-Ohs. Sounds like a cereal.

A gathering of parents of millennials – all of the Morgan Hill Charter School – converged on the patio of Clos LaChance last Friday night to drink wine, feast on Chef Charles Lewis’ fine cuisine (I’ve heard it said this is the 10th anniversary of his last year of acting as chef for the event), and to buy, buy, buy! The bid cards were flying up into the cool night air as spouses exchanged knowing glances begging, “Don’t pay any more for that shitzu!” – a rocky road to pet ownership.

High-school sweethearts and former San Francisco 49er Rhett Hall and his wife, Juli Hall, stood tall for the event, knowing their relationship with the school will extend into the next decade with their four sons. Danielle De Rome, Charter School’s new elementary art teacher, loves the relationship she has with the students, integrating art curriculum into the classroom. “I love the way they teach,” said DeRome, a graduate of the art school Escola Massana in Barcelona, Spain.

“Teaching art at Charter is absolutely fun. I recently worked with a classroom teacher integrating lessons on Marc Chagall and her curriculum of ‘Fiddler on the Roof.’ Chagall and ‘Fiddler’ author Joseph Stein were friends, and the two influenced each other’s works,” explained DeRome, educating me on a subject.

DeRome’s husband, Guy, shares Danielle’s love of the arts as a musician in the band Shadowopera. I missed the band’s recent gig at Clos LaChance, but as soon as the band members are healthy again, there will be more opportunity to hear their sound. Check out their Web site www.shadowopera.com.

Heather Lacerda, chairperson for the Charter dinner/ auction, reports a record profit of more than $90,000.

“I’m a little competitive. Last year we made $82,000. As long as we made at least $83,000, I was going to be happy,” she said. Well done, Heather, but you may have encouraged a second bid at chairing the event. “No problem – I’ve already committed to next year’s dinner auction. You need at least one year to learn, then you really kick it the next!” said Heather , talking on a cell phone while driving through Starbucks and picking up the go-go juice that keeps her organizing such success.

Go, go, go … to Booksmart on Oct. 5 for the author signing of Gilroy writer Dave Keane’s third book in the Joe Sherlock Series, “Case #000003, The Case of the Monkey-Eye Diamond.” Dave will be on hand to sign books and do a little stand-up comedy relative to the 10-year-old’s sense of humor he possesses.

If you’re looking for a night out of adult humor with comic diversity, head to Cobb’s Comedy Club in San Francisco to see Dat Phan, winner of the first season of “Last Comic Standing.” Dat fans can catch the shows Oct. 12-15. “What the hao!”

Ciao for now.
