Cheers for World Series team, Jeers for coach

CALLER 1: Hello, I have something for the Cheers and Jeers section. Cheers is for the Gilroy girls softball team that recently took fifth in the world (series). Jeers – the manager of the team was temporarily suspended for the final game because of cheating. Apparently he didn’t play two girls the required amount of innings in the semifinal game or the game before that. That is why coach Jimenez was coaching the team in the last game. I was just wondering if that was true. If it is, I think it gives a black eye to Gilroy as people throughout the world or people who were at the finals in (Oregon) think of Gilroy as a team that has not just represented the West three consecutive years, but also as a team that tried to cheat their way into the finals. Also, I got really tired of hearing manager Lester being quoted as saying that his team is the best. I think that downgrades everyone else. If they were the best, they would have won the whole dang thing.

GREEN PHONE:

Dear Cheers and Jeers,

since this comment was submitted to Green Phone, not the Opinion section, GP will handle the matter. The sports department was shocked to learn Gilroy’s girls Majors manager Dusty Lester had been suspended. He failed to mention this when calling in the game results by phone that evening so we called Lester to find out if it was true. Here is what he had to say: “Yeah, actually that’s what wound up happening. We had a mix up in the dugout. Two players didn’t get their at-bats. They got their playing time (in the field) and they were up next (to bat) but we got out (at the plate). It was just miscommunication between the coaches. It was nothing intentional, it just kind of happened.”

Lester went on to say the two girls played the entire eight-inning game that followed, which Gilroy won to take fifth place. He was not allowed to sit in the dugout and coach James Jimenez took over as manager. Talking to Lester it seems like he has taken a lot of flak for what was an innocent mistake. Still, managers have to be on top of these things. And on a side note, coaches should always be completely forthcoming so The Dispatch can accurately report your local sports.

CALLER 2: I’d like to talk to someone about UFOs.

GREEN PHONE:

Dear Little Green Men,

This is Green Phone, not X-Files.

Animals Shouldn’t Suffer for Stupidity

CALLER 3: I have some thoughts on the Michael Vick problem. What Michael Vick did was a despicable pursuit of sordid thrills. Some offenses are forgivable. These are not. No sort of penalty or punishment that Michael Vick can receive will take away the stink from what he did. He is a marked man forever, and well he should be. I pity his family, but I do not pity him. He knew better, but he wasn’t better. Animal cruelty hits folks differently than drugs or sex. Animals are the innocent victims and are only trained to kill by their masters who bet on a winner. Michael Vick should be published to the fullest extent the law will allow.

GREEN PHONE:

Dear Animal Lover,

GP agrees that Mike Vick deserves to lose football, money and his freedom. So far, he has shown absolutely no remorse in public for his actions. He clearly has been entitled to a degree that the common man cannot fathom. To have access to any form of entertainment in the world but choosing to get cheap thrills by watching dogs rip each other apart is disgusting and demented. Ever since someone discovered he could run faster than other athletes, Vick has been allowed to do whatever he wants. This is the time for him to lose everything he has. While Americans love to see people make the most of a second chance, right now its hard to figure anyone will wholeheartedly root for Vick ever again. GP sure wouldn’t want him playing for its team. Also, if you own a Mike Vick jersey, STOP WEARING IT. It’s like wearing an O.J. Simpson throwback. Vick’s jersey would be better used as a chew toy.
