Gilroy’s varsity boys basketball team had a rough first game in the Tri-County Athletic League Tuesday, losing 58-38 to the Palma Chieftains.

Lorenzo Dobson led the Mustangs in scoring with 13 points to go with five rebounds, but a strong offensive effort by Palma’s John Bonano (16 points) and Clark Fox (15 points), along with an aggressive approach on defense by the Chieftains, helped pace the home team to a strong first three quarters and eventually the win.

Gilroy trailed 13-7 after the first quarter, 28-15 at the half and 44-21 to start the fourth. It was in the final period that Gilroy found a better rhythm, outscoring Palma 17-14 in the final period.

The Mustangs’ Marshad Johnson had a team-high 13 rebounds to go with nine points and two blocks, while Derek Jensen had six points.

Elijah Harrell (4 points), Jeremy Damon (3), Justin Wheat (2) and Tyler Hartman (1) were the other scorers for GHS.

As a team Gilroy had two assists.

Palma improved to an 8-6 record overall, while Gilroy dropped to 6-10. It was the first league game for both schools.

The Mustangs’ next contest will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at San Benito High.
