Despite record high gas prices, the number of Californians planning to travel this Memorial Day weekend is on the rise, according to a new report from AAA of Northern California.

About 3.9 million Californians are expected to be traveling by motor vehicle, up 2.7 percent from last year. And with all those motorists on the roads, the California Highway Patrol is reminding drivers to fasten seat belts and secure safety seats on every trip to avoid risking danger to themselves or their children.

All available CHP officers will be on duty, said Capt. Bob Davies, commander of the CHP’s Hollister-Gilroy Area office.

”We’re honing in on motorists who ignore their safety belts or fail to properly secure children,” he said, emphasizing that every passenger must be secured with a safety belt. In addition, passengers riding in the cargo area of a pick up truck or camper must be secured.

AAA’s holiday travel figures are based on a national telephone survey of 1,300 adults by the Travel Industry Association of America, which conducts special research for AAA.

Tips for motorists:

• Stop every two hours or 100 miles of travel to stretch your legs and take a quick break.

• Dress children comfortably, and bring small pillows and blankets for naps.

• Bring plenty of bottled water, snacks and juices.

• Carry emergency items including a flashlight, jumper cables and a reflective triangle.

• Consider bringing a cellular phone for emergencies, Source: AAA Travel
