South County residents will have opportunities to celebrate the holiday spirit at upcoming concerts sponsored by Morgan Hill churches.
“He Is Born! Gloria!” will be presented at the Morgan Hill Presbyterian Church (16970 DeWitt Avenue) on Friday, Dec. 3 at 7pm and Sunday, Dec. 5 at 4pm.
Both performances will feature the church’s 21-member adult Celebration Choir, 29-member youth Genesis Choir, and a 31-piece orchestra featuring members of the South Valley Symphony and Morgan Hill Wind Symphony.
The evening will retell the story of Jesus’ nativity through biblical narration and a variety of musical pieces, including opportunities for the audience to sing along with the performers. Familiar seasonal music such as “Oh, Come All Ye Faithful,” “O Holy NIght,” “Silent Night,” and “Angels We Have Heard on High” will be presented. A men’s choral group will sing the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s “Messiah.”
Admission for this inspirational event is only $3 per person or $12 per family. For more information call the church office at 779-2820.
The following Friday, Dec. 10, a South Valley Community Christmas Concert will be held at the Morgan Hill Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (1790 East Dunne Avenue) at 8pm.
This evening of inspiring holiday music had its origin as an annual performance put on by the choir of the local Mormon Church. Word spread, and members of other faith traditions began to attend. For the past several years it has become an even more community-wide event as St. Catherine’s Parish became the co-sponsor in providing the public a gift of free holiday musical entertainment.
The following groups are scheduled to perform:
• Zion Choir, a San Jose youth group
• Handbell Choir from Gilroy’s Good Shepherd Lutheran Church
• The Gilroy High School Chamber Singers
• Notable Kids’ Choir
• South Valley Suzuki String Academy
• St. Catherine’s Celebration (adult), Children’s, and Filipino-American choirs
• The LDS Stake Choir
Although many titles of individual musical pieces have not yet been selected, among those announced so far are “Sanctus, Benedictus”; “Born Is He, This Holy Child”; Hah-lalujah”; “Jesus Child”; and “Christmas Kumbaya.”
Joan Locsin, St. Catherine’s Parish musician, invites the whole community to attend. “After nearly a decade of these concerts,” she says, “each year is a great memory for this wonderful time of year.”
Hal Hendrickson, spokesman for the local LDS Church, invites everyone to participate “in this wonderful traditional way of celebrating the Christmas season.”
