“We have such a strong wrestling tradition in this town that we felt we could compete,” said CHS athletic director Darren Yafai.
So after petitioning to join the Monterey Bay League a year ahead of schedule, the Cougars varsity program, led by coach Alecxis Lara, secured their first league win, beating Seaside in a MBL dual meet Wednesday night

Boys Basketball
The Cougars dropped a tough 64-51 decision to Palma on Wednesday night.
“I think they were a little tired at times, but they left everything they had out on the court,” head coach Kaden Bahner said in a message following the game.
D.J. Campos scored a team-high 13 points, Marcus Harrell contributed nine, and Peter Hilkene had eight.
CHS hosts Pinewood at 4 p.m. on Friday.
Boys Soccer
Two goals from David Anaya helped the Cougars to a 5-0 win over Pinewood on Tuesday. Frankie Silvera, Edwin Galena and Christian Manzo also found the net for the Cougars, who move to 5-0-1 in the year.
“We have eight kids that play club soccer and know how to play the game,” said head coach Stephen Casey about his team’s early success.
The Cougars continue action Saturday in the semifinals of the Lynbrook Tournament against Oak Grove.
