The Gilroy City Council appointed three new city commissioners Monday night.

Pia Berryman was chosen for the city’s parks and recreation commission, Hugh Smith was tabbed the newest member of the library commission and Elizabeth Sanford was selected for the planning commission.

“This has been the hardest decision we’ve had on these,” Councilman Dion Bracco said of the list of qualified candidates for each open commission seat.

All three seats will expire over the next three Decembers.

Sanford’s planning commission seat expires this December, Berryman’s parks and recreation commission seat expires Dec. 31, 2012 and Smith’s library commission seat runs out Dec. 31, 2013.

Council approves swimming pool demolition

The Council also approved the demolition of the Gilroy Gardens swimming pool, which has gone unused for seven years, according to a staff report.

Councilman Peter Arellano said the pool should maybe be saved and converted into a skateboard park, but Bracco said the pool was too rectangular to skateboard in, and leaving it there could create a liability.

Bracco called demolishing the pool “the best thing to do.”

The Council approved the demolition by a 7-0 vote.

Gilroy Gardens, which is owned by the city, will bear the cost of demolishing the pool, according to a staff report.

Demolition costs are expected to total approximately $27,000, compared with a projected $175,602 cost to retrofit the pool.
