Colibri Gallery in Morgan Hill recently donated $2,345 to a local nonprofit, 6th Street Studios & Art Center in Gilroy, to support its children’s art programming.
Colibri Gallery hosted its second annual Morgan Hill Plein Air Paint Out in October. The local community was invited to interact with award-winning Bay Area artists as they painted the local landscape within a 10-mile radius of downtown Morgan Hill. Over the course of two days, more than 40 paintings were created, installed in the gallery, and judged for awards by nationally-recognized painter Kim Lordier.
Bay Area artist Kristian Matthews won first place for his oil painting “Atmospheric Alley.”
In support of its mission to invigorate the visual arts in the South Bay, Colibri Gallery donated its proceeds from the event to 6th Street Studios & Art Center.
Colibri Gallery selected 6th Street Studios & Art Center as this year’s nonprofit, because the art center supports local artists and arts education in the region. Founded by Emily McEwan-Upright in 2019, the center, located in downtown Gilroy, provides affordable access to creative spaces, art classes, art instructional opportunities and cultural activities.
For 2023, the studios hope to reserve half of their Art Camp enrollment for scholarship recipients, children who come from low-income families or those who are served by another nonprofit organization like Community Solutions. Additionally, the nonprofit hopes to create an accessible After-School Art Program with transportation to enrich the lives of students ages 5-13 in visual, performing and musical arts.
