Film night and discussion

Spaghetti feed and silent art auction

Easter egg hunt, fun and games

Victory Outreach Church of Gilroy presents the third annual Community Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday at Christmas Hill Park. Registration begins at 10 a.m., and the hunt begins at 11 a.m. for kids up to 12 years old. There will be an appearance by the Easter bunny, games, prizes, faces painting, a photo booth and food booth, and jump house. Details: 848-6715.

Planning board has vacancy

The City of Gilroy has announced its looking to fill a seat on the city’s planning commission, after chair Ben Anderson resigned almost three weeks ago to move closer to a job in Texas.

Anderson resigned after just over three months into his term as chair during an April 7 planning commission meeting.

Anderson said he had worked for the company for 15 months, and his work schedule allowed him to stay at home in Gilroy only a couple days per week, he said. He said he works as a national pump salesman for Maruyama.

“It just made sense to move back to Texas,” Anderson said.

He was sworn in as planning commission chair in December 2010. Before that, Anderson served as the commission’s vice chair. Anderson was born in Salinas and moved to Gilroy in 1988.

The city is also looking to fill seats on the library commission and the parks and recreation commission.

Memorial Day Parade fundraiser at Gilroy Gardens

A Gilroy nonprofit group is giving residents a chance to enjoy a night of food and music at Gilroy Gardens, all for the benefit of the city’s upcoming Memorial Day parade.

Gilroy Community Organization will host “Dinner & Concert Under the Stars” from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 4 at Gilroy Gardens, located at 3050 Hecker Pass Road.

Hot dogs and hamburgers will be served, and entertainment will be provided by the Watsonville Community Band.

Tickets are $20. Children between the ages of 4 and 10 will receive admission for $10. Children younger than 3 years old are admitted free.

Proceeds will support the Gilroy Memorial Day Parade, set for Monday, May 30.

Solorsano wins FBI challenge

Eighth grade students at Ascencion Solorsano Middle School located at 7121 Grenache Way have won the National FBI-SOS Internet Challenge for safe online surfing for the month of February.

According to a press release issued by the FBI, Ascension students posted the best score in the country among eighth graders and will claim the national award, which includes a trophy and a visit from the FBI on April 19 at Ascencion.

The monthly program runs each school year from September through May and is a free educational program that delivers critical Internet safety information for grades three through eight with a separate monthly challenge for each grade level, according to the press release.

Plaques honor historic homes

Gilroyans who reside in some of the city’s oldest homes soon could receive daily reminders of their places in history.

The Gilroy Historical Society’s Historic Home Plaque Committee has selected a design for 8-by-11 cast-bronze plaques that state the street address, historic name and construction year for the houses. Most homes on Gilroy’s Historic Homes Inventory are automatically eligible to apply for a plaque, though homes not included in the inventory can qualify based on architectural significance, location, local historic interest or age of home, according to the Historical Society.

Grad night donations being accepted

After-school recreation program

Free admission at Pinnacles

Pinnacles National Monument will host Healthy Parks, Healthy People during National Park Week through Sunday. This is a fee-free week throughout the National Park Service. All park entrance fees will be waived to the monument during this period.
