Spaghetti dinner will raise money for high school choirs
The choir groups from Christopher High School and Gilroy High
School will hold their annual Spaghetti Dinner from 5 to 8 p.m.
Wednesday, Feb. 2 in the GHS cafeteria at 750 West Tenth
Street.
Tickets are currently being sold for $8 by choir members, and
will be available for purchase at the door come the evening of the
event. All proceeds from the event will benefit planned choir
activities throughout the year.

The Chamber Choir at GHS will be traveling to Austria, Bratislava and Hungary during spring break. The other choirs will participate in festivals in San Luis Obispo and Southern California.
Chef Majid Bahriny of Mama Mia’s Ristorante Italiano will be preparing “Pasta Tre Calore,” a dish including meat, pesto and Alfredo sauces.

Historical society to hold function in honor of cowboy artist and musician
The Gilroy Historical Society will be holding a special program featuring Curley Tomey, a cowboy artist at 3 p.m. Saturday at Lizarran Tapas Restaurant at 7400 Monterey Street.
Carol Peters, retired Gilroy High School art teacher, will present a Power Point program about Tomey, her father. Tomey was a well-known blacksmith and self-taught artist who crafted silver bridles, bits, spurs and jewelry. In recognition of Gilroy’s “cowboy period” there will also be poetry and music.
According to the society, rodeo cowboys would come to Tomey, asking for personalized belts and buckles. Tomey also made a number of branding irons for ranches in the Santa Clara County.
Tomey also played the guitar, violin, harmonica and other instruments by ear, and even made a record.

Mocha Moms support group to hold its first membership drive
The Gilroy Chapter of Mocha Moms, Inc. a support group for mothers of color, will be holding its first membership drive from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5 at 9760 Bunting Court.
The group will be sharing information about their organization, serving refreshments, giving away prizes and announcing chapter events and activities.
Mocha Moms, Inc. is a nationwide organization whose mission is to educate, support and encourage mothers of color who are making parenting a priority.
According to a press release, Mocha Moms, Inc. welcomes people of all religions, races, educational backgrounds and income levels. Mocha Moms, Inc. is a nonprofit and serves as an advocate for at-home mothers and those who work inside and outside the home. Details: 679-9848.
Saturday science extravaganza coming up at Gavilan College
Gavilan College will hold a one day conference called Science Alive from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5 on campus at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. The cost is $10 and will include all the workshops and lunch.
Science Alive consists of hands-on science workshops for middle school students grades 6 to 8. More than 300 students from the Bay Area register from these workshops every year, according to a press release issued by the college.
Students will be able to choose from 22 different workshops including Magic with Physics, Build a Hovercraft, CSI: Where the Evidence Never Lies, Build a Racer and more. Students will also enjoy lunch, raffles and prizes.
Presenters will include current and former Gavilan College students, math and science instructors and guests from the Schmahl Science Workshop, San Jose State University, Genome Bioinformatics Group and the Chabot Space & Science Center.
