– The area Bible Quiz Competition for AWANA International took place recently at Salinas Valley Community Church. Participants came from Morgan Hill, Salinas, Monterey and Santa Cruz, and included kids from the third to sixth grades.

The quiz is made up of two sections: one multiple choice and one speed round. The quiz is done by the books that the kids are currently in. There were several kids from Gilroy representing Morgan Hill Bible Church who did well. Here are the results:

– Book 1: Jessica Bermea of Gilroy and Monica Rauser of San Martin finished in third place. Alli Hathaway of Gilroy and Nicki Peternel of Morgan Hill finished in first place. Alli was Bible Quiz Champion, receiving the highest number points.

– Book 2: MJ Lema of Gilroy and Noah Spremich of Gilroy finished in second place. Austin Miller of Gilroy and Corbin King of San Jose finished in first place. Corbin was Bible Quiz Champion, receiving the highest number of points.

– Book 3: Andrew Hathaway of Gilroy and Moriah Spremich of Gilroy finished in first place. Andrew was Bible Quiz Champion and received the Highest Honors Award for a perfect score.

– Book 4: Alyssa Miller of Gilroy and Carissa Huffman of Morgan Hill finished in first place.

Student Speaker Contest

– The Gilroy Lions Club hosted a dinner and Student Speaker Contest at the Gilroy Methodist Church last month. The winner of the speech debate was Krystal Rincon, a junior at Gilroy High School. She received a certificate and monetary award.

The subject of the speech was “The Internet – Hero or Villain?”  The speeches were timed, and judged for content and presentation.

Krystal and another speaker, their guests, their coaches and others attended, as well as Lions Club members.

Krystal went on to win the next level of the contest at the San Martin Lions Club a few weeks ago. If she continues to progress, Krystal could compete with other high schoolers from throughout California and Nevada.

The top winners will be awarded $100,000 worth of scholarships. The Student Speaker Contest is held by the Lions Club annually.

The club meets at 12:10pm the second Monday and at 7pm the fourth Monday at the Harvest Time Restaurant, 7397 Monterey St. in Gilroy.

The Gilroy Lions are always looking for new members interested in serving the community. Membership is open to men and women 21 years or older with the interest and drive to help the less fortunate in our community. For more information, call Bill at (408) 847-7829 or attend a meeting.
