Gilroy girls shine
Three students from Ascension Solorsano Middle School have just returned from a week at Tech Trek, a science camp for middle-school girls sponsored by the American Association of University Women held on the campus of Mills College in Oakland from June 26 to July 2. The students are seventh graders Toni Velasco, Mitzi Sanchez and Ana Virgen. A highlight of their week was a field trip to Chabot College, where they were briefed by NASA officials about the historic July 3 Deep Impact probe, which successfully hit its target, Comet Tempel-1. The girls felt their experience was so rewarding that they have volunteered to work at the Garlic Festival and put their earnings toward next year’s Tech Trek scholarship recipients. Three of the teachers at Tech Trek were also from Gilroy: Nancy Fohner, Georgia Stern and Kim Watkins. Scholarships to the camp were awarded to the students from the Gilroy branch of AAUW and partially funded by a grant through Solorsano Middle School. Pictured from left to right are Connie Rogers of AAUW, Carol Smith of AAUW, Toni Velasco, Mitzi Sanchez, Ana Virgen, Pat Kloecker, teacher and Marianne Peoples of AAUW.
