Whether they’ve got feathers, fur, scales or long ears, local pets and their owners are invited to attend a Halloween costume party Oct. 19 at PetSmart in Gilroy.

The 24,000-square-foot Shipley Mansion, which is nestled in the San Martin foothills and came on the market mid-May, attracted 18 offers from people all around the world and was poised to set the record for the highest home price ever in South County.

Call it a hobby gone right. Jerry and Judy Ross, a husband/wife team that owns Ross Vineyards and Winery near in Morgan Hill, planted their first vineyard in 1999 simply because they like wine. Their tasting room opened in May, making them the 22nd and newest members of South County’s ever-burgeoning cluster of vintners.

On Nov. 5, voters will select a new director for the South Santa Clara Valley Memorial District, a district that falls within Santa Clara County and serves the non-medical social needs of veterans residing in the area. Gilroy is the only incorporated city within the district and includes about 40 percent of the district’s population.

The Santa Clara County Public Health Department is inviting all members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community living in the county to fill out a survey that will help with its newest health assessment.

A 27-year-old Morgan Hill woman, Casey Pearson, was killed in a car wreck Monday night on Watsonville Road near an unincorporated area of Morgan Hill, the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner's Office confirmed.
