Electrocuted Turkey Vulture Ignites Small Fire

Gilroy and California Department of Forestry/South County Fire firefighters, including Gilroy's Randy Wong, work on hot spots after extinguishing a small vegetation fire along Hecker Pass Highway near Goldsmith Seeds Friday morning. A turkey vulture looking to snack on a dead skunk in the road was electrocuted after landing on overhead power lines. Sparks from the electrocution ignited the grass fire below. High humidity, late morning fog and very light winds kept the fire from running up a nearby hill before firefighters were able to contain the blaze, Division Chief Ed Bozzo said.
