Student of the Week: Jailene Arellano

Each month, the principals of Gilroy and Christopher high schools choose a total of four students (two from GHS and two from CHS) to spotlight. GHS junior Jailene Arellano, 16, is this week's Student of the Week.

James Dent named ‘Educator of the Year’

The Gilroy Chamber of Commerce has named Gilroy Prep Principal James Dent Educator of the Year for 2013. The honor will be presented at the Chamber's 60th Annual Spice of Life Awards dinner on Feb 9. The Spice of Life Awards are given to recipients for their volunteerism and dedication to the Gilroy community.

Free tax assistance services for low-income workers

United Way Silicon Valley is working with a coalition of financial institutions and nonprofit and government agencies, including the Internal Revenue Service, to connect eligible local families to free tax services through its Earn It! Keep It! Save It! program. Tax preparation services are provided by trained, IRS-certified volunteers at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites located throughout Santa Clara County at selected libraries, nonprofit organizations, churches, community centers and credit unions.
