Ashley Tangeman won the Gilroy Sunrise Rotary Club speech competition Jan. 15. She will advance to the Area 6 competition Jan. 24 hosted by the Almaden Valley Rotary Club at Boulder Ridge Golf Club.
Drive to feed troops a better breakfast
After working 18 hour days in eastern Afghanistan where he operates and repairs armored vehicles damaged by blasts from improvised explosive devices or mechanical failures, Private First Class Ryan Reynaud of Gilroy returned to base camp and was met with an unpleasant surprise: Breakfast was no longer being served in the chow hall.
An overhaul for STAR testing?
It was announced this week in a press release that the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson, has made recommendations to the Governor and Legislature to shift the focus of Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) testing in California to require students to think critically, solve problems and show a greater depth of knowledge.

SF Giants Trophy Tour will stop in Gilroy, Morgan Hill
South County Giants fans will be seeing double when the 2010 and 2012 World Championship trophies, crafted by Tiffany & Co., will be on display from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16 inside the MACSA gymnasium at 277 IOOF Ave. in Gilroy, and from 6 to 8 p.m. at St. Catherine's Church, located at 17400 Peak Ave. in Morgan Hill.
