Dear Editor,

I often use the San Martin transfer station as I live in the county east of Gilroy. I have 2 1/2 acres of brush to keep under control. Lately I often find my self waiting in line to enter the San Martin facility. Part of this is due to reduced hours on the weekends. This seems to be the time when people catch up on their clean-up projects. It is not uncommon to sit on the street for a half hour.

I realize this plan is for more space at the Highway 152 site to allow more people to enter the facility and be handled more quickly. However, I expect most people will approach the facility from the west (eastbound on 152). Thus they will be making left turns across Highway 152 into the transfer station.

The westbound traffic on the weekends is often quite dense. So making a left turn across that traffic will be difficult, time consuming, and could require a lot of patience.

This makes images of overloaded pickup trucks being smashed by compact cars or SUVs spring to mind.

Also I suspect we would see trucks, cars with trailers and vans, backed-up all the way over the freeway into Gilroy and perhaps onto the freeway itself. I hope part of the plan for this location includes a light at the entrance to the transfer station to facilitate left turns.
